Grave Lantern vs Memorial Candle: What Is the Difference?

The terms grave lantern, memorial candle, grave candle and cemetery candle holder are often used interchangeably, but they can describe slightly different products. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right item for a graveside or memorial garden.

What is a grave lantern?

A grave lantern is the outer decorative structure. It usually includes a base, top cover and transparent panels that protect or surround the candle insert. Some are made mainly from glass, while others combine glass or transparent panels with decorative plastic frames.

What is a memorial candle?

A memorial candle is the light source placed inside a lantern or candle holder. It can be a traditional wax candle or an LED candle designed to imitate a natural flame. On many modern memorial lanterns, the LED insert is removable and replaceable.

What is a cemetery candle holder?

A cemetery candle holder is a broader phrase. It may refer to a lantern, enclosed candle container or another protective holder designed for use at a grave. Searches for cemetery lantern and grave candle holder often lead to the same style of product.

Why choose a lantern instead of a candle alone?

A lantern adds structure, decoration and a sense of permanence around the light. It can complement polished granite or stone and can also provide a visual tribute through details such as roses, crosses or heart shapes.

Which option is right for you?

If you want a complete memorial piece, choose a lantern supplied with an LED candle insert. If you already have a suitable lantern, you may only need a replacement memorial candle. Always check insert height and width before buying a replacement.
